Parents Guide
As a parent, you want nothing but the best for your son. As he takes a huge step in his life going away to school, it’s important to keep in mind that the lessons you have taught him through the years are the tools he needs to start making his own positive decisions.
If your son has made the decision to join a fraternal organization, it is a commitment that warrants not only serious thought, but your support as well. By deciding to become a lifelong member of Phi Kappa Sigma International Fraternity, your son is taking another huge step that will positively affect nearly every aspect of his life, both as an undergraduate and as an alumnus.
We’re excited to have your son as a member, and we’re glad that you’re here to learn more about our organization!
Academics
Being a member of Phi Kappa Sigma means that you take your academics seriously, and your brothers will be there to help you succeed when the going gets tough.
Here at Phi Kappa Sigma we take our ‘work hard play hard’ mentality very seriously. Academics is the top priority amongst our brothers. Consider:
Over 70% of students who join a Greek organization graduate, compared to less than 50% of all non-Greek students.
The average GPA of all Greek students nationwide is higher than the average GPA of all non-Greek students.
You will be able to lean on brothers for academic support.
You will have access to both tangible and intangible resources by having support from brothers while pursuing your education.
Through Phi Kappa Sigma you will not just have a wider access to academic support but also scholarship and career growth opportunities.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the financial costs?
In total, new members pay $400 in new member fees. There is no financial difference between rushing in the fall or spring, as fall new members have their spring dues waived. Once a new member becomes a brother, in-house dues are $5400 per semester, which includes your room, a chef who cooks five days per week, and living with your lifelong brothers! Out-of-house dues are $900 per semester; however, we have a two-year live-in requirement unless there are extenuating circumstances.
Do we “haze”?
We do not haze our new members in any way per our national and IFC bylaws.
Will my grades be impacted if I become a new member?
At Purdue Skulls, we understand that we are students first. Our new members and brothers are subject to regular grade checks and are buddied with a mentor of a similar major in order to ensure that our new members are on top of their grades and succeed in their classes.
Are there any scholarships associated with Skulls?
Over $60,000 is awarded by our national organization every year to undergraduate members who exemplify strong academics, leadership, and fraternal involvement and make an impact on their campus. We also have scholarships held by many of our alumni.
